camp breakfast

next morning we woke up when we felt like it and it was drizzling ever so slightly. miski was still sleeping soundly which was unusual. enjoyed the cool morning breeze and lounged around a bit. eventually we got up and took puppy for a stroll and broke down the tent. then we made traditional australian breakfast: jaffles!  they are amazing! i had baked beans, egg and tomato. jose had salami, cheese and beans and tomatoes. yum.  the boys also had some cherrabun to top it all off. we had tea and chatted and watched the dogs run around and play.  we eventually cleaned up and went to the stream again to wander in the water. headed out early to get home for nanna naps and laundry. it was so great to finally get to go camping again after all this time!  jose and i had such a good time. can't wait for the next outback camping.  more photos here

Camballin camping

went on a short camping trip this weekend with our friends sam and ayesha! poor miski got car sick on the way... we went out to a spot near Looma community and Liveringa station. couldn't cross the "stream" because it was far too squishy to get to the other side. it was a beautiful, breezy, cloudy day so we set up shop for a bit in the afternoon and tried to get some cherrabun (prawn like critters) without success. jose fished a bit and miski and cora bonded by the cars.  after a while we drove around looking for an alternative place to camp. found a good spot by the side of a small hill and set up our tents and gear.  miski LOVES camping!  she drove poor cora to distraction and wreaked havoc for a while but it got her wiggles out. she even learned to swim with cora in a nearby watering hole.  the boys went off to catch our dinner and ayesha and i stayed back to chat and have tea and watch the fort.  they came back with the biggest creatures i've ever seen!  we had cherrabun, steak, and stir-fried noodles/veggies for dinner. yum! add a bit of red wine and some good tunes and we had a lovely, relaxing, beautiful evening out bush.  went to bed and miski slept all night at the foot of my mattress. so cute.  see more photos in the camballin camping trip album

a beautiful sunset again. we went for a quick fish - caught nothing - and enjoyed our time there. beautiful sunset on the way home and grabbed some take out pizza from one of the 3 local restaurants. weird right? not much for choice but the pizza was yummy.  lovely evening

went back out to the jetty for take two that afternoon and although there were many fewer bites overall, jose did manage to catch two more sharks.  the first one was about 10 inches and so cute! second one (in photo) was bigger and angrier.  miski wanted the bait but wanted nothing to do with the sharks which is good.  we had fun fishing again and left to drop off puppy and head over to a friends place for dinner! it was amazing, we had fantastic green chicken curry over rice with sauteed asian veggies and fried tempeh with sweet chili sauce. yum. dessert was amazing - chocolate puddle pudding with vanilla bean ice cream. it was so rich and delicious. i made a pig of myself. we were so tired from the week and fishing that we went home kind of early and on sunday we had a really lazy day spent doing laundry and cleaning the house and napping. great weekend!  Many many more photos and some videos under Derby 2011 Album

we had heard that fishing off the jetty here was a waste of time. how wrong that was!  got up at 5am to go out today and though we didn't pull anything up, jose hooked 4 sharks, one that was almost 6 feet long! they all broke the lines but it was amazing. we have a very short video of one on the Derby 2011 album.  we're going back out this afternoon for another try as high tide goes out again. super fun! plus last night we had a ball! we went from POETS (piss off early tomorrow's saturday) for a few drinks with colleagues to emmetts place for dinner with brooke, gen, and matt. we had amazing tacos and wahu wine.  tim tams for dessert and a game of taboo was the perfect end!

finally got ourselves a fishy!

went to broome for work and emmett and jose met us all down here on friday. had an awesome bbq friday night, a lovely day of shopping and garage sale-ing saturday morning and a great brunch in town. then we headed off to the broome jetty for a bit of a fish. wasn't looking good there - all our neighboring fishermen were catching pretty good looking fish but we had nothing. when they left we took over their spot and within 10 minutes got ourselves some dinner! very exciting. i felt bad for the fish but i'm excited to eat him tonight nonetheless.  jose and i caught him together! check out more photos here http://picasaweb.google.com/nicole13/Derby2011?feat=directlink

fishing day with our first croc sighting!

brooke came up from broome to visit this weekend which was amazing! we went to a couple of parties in town on friday night and had a ball.  saturday we went garage sale-ing and i got some much needed kitchen gear - casserole dish, french press, extra pan, etc.  then we got invited to go fishing and have a picnic out at the river. we accepted of course and had a great light lunch and then fished for quite a while. sadly no fish again this time, apparently it was the wrong time of day for fishing. oh well. it was so much fun though, very relaxing and we got to see our very first wild croc!  just a baby, but dangerous looking nonetheless. you can just make him out in the photo above.  more photos are under Derby 2011 Album

fishing and puppies!

yesterday we got to skype the whole family (both in peru and in the states) and I got to see the thanksgiving dinner going on full force without me :( last night we went to a wonderful dinner party and then this morning headed off to have a go at fishing! we went at low tide and didn't have any luck sadly. caught several crabs but they were too small to eat really. jose also caught a sea snake! that was exciting. we saw lots of birds and cute mud skippers and jose had his first go at driving a car! he did really well and we'll start doing more of that soon.  even though we left empty handed we had a really fun day and then went to grab the new puppy in town who needs a home...guess who wants to keep him (her actually i think)!  I want to name her happy or noodle. we took her to the pool and had a lovely swim and now are relaxing at home.  fantastic weekend as usual. puppy adoption to be decided....
